LUNG CANCER ADVOCACY

The founders of LCFA have always been actively involved in the nationwide lung cancer advocacy community. We strive to work collaboratively with other lung cancer organizations in order to leverage our network to help increase funding for lung cancer research. Whenever we believe there is an opportunity for action, we will identify that opportunity here and suggest ways you can get involved.

February 24-27, 2010 LCFA co-founders, Kim Norris, David Sturges and Lori Monroe attended the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer Annual Meeting in Santa Monica, CA. Kim, David and Lori have actively participated in this meeting for the past 7 years.

January 11-14, 2010 LCFA co-founders, Lori Monroe and Kim Norris attended the AACR-IASLC Lung Cancer Conference in San Diego, CA. Kim co-chaired the Advocacy, Regulatory and Funding session with Lori as a panel speaker.

August 24, 2009 LCFA co-founder, Kim Norris's article was published in the opinion-editorial section of the Los Angeles Times. The purpose of the op-ed article is to encourage revenue received from a potential new tobacco tax in California to be used for lung cancer research. Stigma of lung cancer stymies research funds. March 18, 2009 LCFA co-founder, Lori Monroe was appointed by NCI Office of Advocacy Relations to the Patient Advocacy Steering Committee. This group works with advocates involved with NCI on a scientific level.

March 12-15, 2009 LCFA Co-founder, Lori Monroe attended and gave two presentations at the General Thoracic Surgery Club's Journal meeting in St Pete Florida. Lori's talks were about What We Can Do to Enhance Public Funding for Lung Cancer and a Lung Cancer Survivor's Point of View.

March 5, 2009 LCFA co-founder, Lori Monroe was appointed to the NCI, Thoracic Malignancies Steering Committee that will oversee a shift of focus within the NCI toward lung cancer and clinical trials for lung cancer.

March 5, 2009 LCFA co-signs with 12 other Lung Cancer Organizations on a letter to the United States House of Representatives requesting an increase in lung cancer research funding.

February 24, 2009 LCFA co-signs with 14 Other Lung Cancer Organizations on a Letter to the NIH and NCI Requesting $100M for Lung Cancer Research. ( 59KB )

February 22, 2009 LCFA co-founder, Kim Norris attended the Department of Defense Lung Cancer Research Program (LCRP) Stakeholder's meeting to discuss the Congressionally appropriated $20 million to fund peer-reviewed lung cancer research.

February 3, 2009 LCFA Co-founder, Lori Monroe attended the 3 day Lung Cancer Collaborative Conference in Dallas TX with 18 other organizations discussing the future of advocacy in lung cancer. This conference was made possible by a Genentech grant.

January 27, 2009 United States Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Sam Brownback (R-KS) reintroduced the Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction Act of 2009, legislation authorizing a comprehensive, multi-agency research effort to reduce lung cancer's mortality. November 14-16, 2008 LCFA co-founder, Lori Monroe participated in the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Fall meeting in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

June 27-29, 2008 LCFA co-founder, Lori Monroe participated in the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group meeting. Lori is a member of the Patient Representative Committee and the Thoracic Oncology committees and sub-committees.

May 30, 2008 LCFA Founders, David Sturges, Kim Norris and Lori Monroe attended the NLCP Annual Meeting Lung Cancer; Progress and Promise held in Chicago, Ill. Dr. John Neiderhuber, Lori Monroe and others presented at this meeting.

May 27-29, 2008 LCFA co-founders, Kim Norris attended and Lori Monroe presented at the NLCP's Lung Cancer Advocacy Summit: Acquiring Tools, Effecting Change. The goal of the Lung Cancer Advocacy Summit was to empower advocates by providing them with training, resources, knowledge, and courage to go back to their communities and take action.

February 21-24, 2008 LCFA Founders, Kim Norris, David Sturges and Lori Monroe attended the 7th Annual Targeted Therapies of the Treatment of Lung Cancer/ winter lung SPORE meeting. This meeting is part of the IASLC (International Association of the Study of Lung Cancer) and was held in Santa Monica, California. Also, at this meeting the LCFA had their Annual Executive Meeting and first Friendraiser.

February 12, 2008 LCFA co-founder, Lori Monroe worked with the National Coalition of Cancer Survivors with Surviving with Confidence Video. Based on the results of a new national survey showing that most cancer survivors had feared undergoing chemotherapy before starting treatment, the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship and sanofi-aventis have launched a new program, Surviving with Confidence. A centerpiece of the campaign is an inspirational video featuring respected broadcast journalist and cancer survivor Linda Ellerbee, along with other cancer survivors sharing their experiences during treatment and in the months and years beyond.
